Gerakas, a deeply indented and fully sheltered inlet in the southeastern Peloponnese, is one of the safest natural harbours in the region. Its fjord-like shape made it an ideal anchorage from antiquity, as well as a point of control over maritime routes along the coast between the Argolic and Laconian gulfs.
In antiquity, the area is identified with the important city of Zarax, mentioned by ancient sources as a strategically significant harbour. The city formed part of Spartan territory and served as a naval base, benefiting from the natural protection and narrow entrance of the bay.
During later periods, particularly in Byzantine times, Gerakas continued to function as a safe refuge for vessels, while the wider area retained its defensive importance within the maritime network of the southeastern Peloponnese. The proximity of Monemvasia further reinforced its role as a secondary anchorage.
In modern times, Gerakas did not develop into a major settlement, which contributed to the preservation of its natural character. Instead, it remained a small coastal village closely linked to fishing and the sea.
Today, Gerakas retains the character of a quiet and exceptionally sheltered natural harbour, where historical continuity and landscape remain largely unchanged, offering one of the safest havens in the Maleas region.
