The present town has been known since antiquity for its therapeutic hot springs, whose waters were believed to relieve rheumatism, arthritis and various skin and nervous ailments. These springs were formed around the mid-3rd century BC, following a major volcanic eruption that reshaped the landscape of the peninsula.

The volcano lies on the north-western side of the peninsula, near the hill of Kameni Chora, and its crater measures about 100 metres in diameter and 50 metres in depth. The ancient geographer Strabo recorded that flames emerged from the crater for several days after the eruption, while the surrounding area became inaccessible due to intense heat and sulphurous fumes. In the nearby sea the waters were said to boil, and new deposits were formed as large rocks collapsed into the water.

Most of the Methana peninsula, particularly the northern part beyond the town, is composed of volcanic rock formations. The only major exception is the western peak known as Agia Panagia or Krasopanagia, which appears to have once been a separate island later connected to the mainland by volcanic lava. Local sailors tell a legend that a seaman, saved from a violent storm, vowed to build a chapel there using wine instead of water in its construction, giving the place its unusual name.

Human presence on the peninsula dates back thousands of years. Excavations at Palaeokastro, Agios Georgios and Loutra indicate habitation going back roughly 7,000 years. At Agios Konstantinos archaeologists discovered a Mycenaean settlement and a sanctuary probably dedicated to Poseidon, suggesting that the area was an important maritime cult centre in antiquity.

The ancient city of Methana stood on the western side of the peninsula at Palaeokastro, where remains of a citadel, sanctuaries and burial sites still survive. On the narrow isthmus parts of the fortifications constructed by the Athenians in the late 5th century BC can still be seen, while Roman remains near the sulphurous springs testify to the continued use of the thermal waters during the Roman period.

During the Byzantine era the peninsula remained inhabited and strategically important. Fortifications and churches from this period are found mainly at Palaeokastro and Kounoupitsa, while the mountain ridges of the peninsula preserve ruins of houses and aqueducts, probably used as refuges during periods of pirate raids and invasions.

Sightseeing

Methana Volcano (Kaimeni Chora)
The Methana volcano is one of the most impressive volcanic landscapes in Greece.
