In the past it had different names for a while, like \u201cViriden\u201d named by the ancient Romans probably due to its extensive vegetation, or \u201cSpinosa\u201d called by the foreign sailors of the 18th and the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n<p>Due to its geographical position, it has been a trading station on the sea routes of the Aegean. It has been <strong>inhabited since the 9th century BC.<\/strong>, according to findings from the bay of Limen\u00e1ri (the bay immediately to the east of D\u00e9ndro bay).<\/p>\n\n<p>During the <strong>Roman occupation<\/strong>, the island was a place of exile, as many others in Cyclades.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the years of the <strong>1st World War<\/strong>, it was used by the German cruiser \u201cGoeben\u201d as a hideout from the Allied ships.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the cove of D\u00e9ndro bay, at depths of 3m, lie the remnants of the shipwreck of the <strong>German ship \u201cOrion\u201d<\/strong>, which was sunk by the English Royal Air Force (RAF) on the 23rd of September 1944.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dono\u00fasa is one of the few Aegean islands that kept its original name from antiquity, Dono\u00fasa or Deno\u00fasa.
