Its fjord-like shape made it an ideal anchorage from antiquity, as well as a point of control over maritime routes along the coast between the Argolic and Laconian gulfs.<\/p>\n\n<p>In antiquity, the area is identified with the important city of <strong>Zarax<\/strong>, mentioned by ancient sources as a strategically significant harbour. The city formed part of Spartan territory and served as a naval base, benefiting from the natural protection and narrow entrance of the bay.<\/p>\n\n<p>During later periods, particularly in <strong>Byzantine times<\/strong>, Gerakas continued to function as a safe refuge for vessels, while the wider area retained its defensive importance within the maritime network of the southeastern Peloponnese. The proximity of <strong>Monemvasia <\/strong>further reinforced its role as a secondary anchorage.<\/p>\n\n<p>In modern times, Gerakas did not develop into a major settlement, which contributed to the preservation of its natural character.
