The area is defined by the presence of a lagoon, creating a distinctive landscape that combines maritime activity with the agricultural hinterland.

The name Drepano is likely derived from the shape of the coastline, which resembles a sickle. Until the Second World War, the settlement was known as Haidari, named after the Ottoman agha Haidar, to whom the area belonged during Ottoman rule. The original Greek name was later restored, reflecting the natural form of the site.

Vivari retains the character of a small fishing village, developed around its sheltered bay and the rich fishing grounds of the lagoon. The lagoon remains an important breeding area for fish, as well as a stopover for migratory and rare bird species, contributing to the ecological importance of the region.

The wider area has been inhabited since antiquity, due to its proximity to important centres such as Asini and Nafplio. In later periods, the strategic importance of the coastline led to the construction of defensive works.

At the entrance of the Drepano bay stand the remains of a Venetian fortress, built in AD 1714 during the final phase of Venetian rule in the region. The fort formed part of the defensive network controlling movement within the Argolic Gulf.

Today, Vivari and Drepano are quiet coastal destinations, where fishing tradition, natural environment, and proximity to major historical sites coexist harmoniously.

Sights

Vivari Lagoon
An important ecosystem serving as a breeding ground for fish and a stopover for migratory birds.

Vivari Harbour
A small sheltered bay hosting fishing boats and visiting vessels, preserving its traditional character.

Drepano Village
A traditional inland settlement located a short distance from the coast.

Venetian Fortress (1714)
Ruins of a Venetian fort at the entrance of the bay, accessible via a footpath of approximately 3 km.

Coastal Area
The shoreline offers calm waters and natural shelter suitable for small craft.

Flavours

Lagoon Fish
Fresh fish sourced from the lagoon and local fishing activity.

Seafood of the Argolic Gulf
A variety of seafood prepared simply to highlight natural flavours.

Traditional Meze
Small dishes based on fish and local ingredients.

Local Produce
Olive oil, vegetables, and wine from the Argolid region accompany most meals.

Drepano and Vivari, located along the northern coast of the Argolic Gulf, are closely connected, with Vivari serving as the natural harbour of Drepano.
