Vathykelo bay, from S
Vathykelo is a quiet bay on the northern coasts of Oreoi channel, between Pelasgia and Glyfa. In antiquity, this entire coastal stretch belonged to the territory of the Ainianes, later passing under Thessalian, Macedonian, and finally Roman influence. Though Vathykelo itself does not feature in ancient texts as a harbour or settlement, its calm waters formed part of the maritime corridor that connected the vital port at Stylida with the eastern Greek mainland. Fishermen’s use of the bay likely dates back centuries, and the small inlets of the region often served as anchoring points for local coastal trade—tiny, unsung places where boats waited out weather or transferred goods.
